Program Vice-President Report for 10/19/22

The program for our upcoming Barbershop Bonanza with the Oceanaires Chorus of Santa Monica has been completed.  We will be meeting with them on Saturday October 22, 2022, in Veteran’s Park in Culver City, California.  The Picnic Shelter area of that park has been reserved from 1-5pm.

At 2 p. Introductory remarks will be made by Laura Pallas Singer, Tim Singer, and Mark Singer.  (How appropriate for such an event!)

The Oceanaire quartets will sing before the Oceanaire chorus stands up to sing.  Each quartet will sing one song.  There may be two or three quartets.  After that, the Oceanaires will sing 5 songs (“Brand New Day”, “Give Me a Night in June,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Kokomo” and “Taking A Chance.”)  After the Oceanaires complete their set the VHS chorus will be invited to join in on “Coney Island Baby,” directed by Laura Pallas Singer.

The VHS chorus's first two songs will be "Darkness on the Delta" and "Give My Regards to Broadway."  After that quartet Tempo Tantrum will sing "Shenandoah" and "Sweet Georgia Brown."  The chorus will then sing "Dream Lover." The quartet All in Accord will sing "When I'm 64" and "Nevertheless." The VHS chorus will conclude with "What a Wonderful World" and "Irish Blessing."  The set will conclude with both choruses singing "Honey/Little Lize,"   directed by Tom Raffety.

There will be a break in the program at that point to allow for the organization of the pick-up quartet portion.  Pizza will be provided courtesy of the Oceanaires chorus.  Drinks and ice will be provided by the VHS chorus.  Other snack-type foods and desserts may also be available.

The polecat songs that will be sung by the pick-up quartets are: “My Wild Irish Rose”, “Heart of My Heart/Story of the Rose,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “Down Our Way” and “Shine on Me.”

A sign-up sheet/spread sheet similar to the one below will be used.  Interested singers will put their names and the part(s) they wish to sing.  They would then put an “x” next to the songs they can sing and put a circle around their favorite.

In other matters, the VHS chorus will be hosting the Riveroaks Chorus at our Monday October 24 rehearsal.  At the break the Riveroaks chorus will be singing songs from their upcoming show.  All VHS members are encouraged to wear their VHS colors and nameplates for that occasion.

Members are encouraged to wear costumes for our Halloween rehearsal on Monday October 31.  Board members please show the way and lead by example by wearing a fun costume.

The VHS chorus was pleased to honor director Tom Raffety’s 80th birthday during the break of our October 10, 2022 rehearsal.  Decorations were in place; a birthday cake was served and Tom blew out the less than 80 candles that were placed before him.   In addition, to date more than $140 has been collected as a donation to the VHS in Tom’s honor.
